The country is characterized by cultural diversity: more than 300 ethnic groups with their own languages and traditions live in the archipelago. Economically, agriculture, fishing, and increasingly also services play a major role. Despite growth, a significant portion of the population continues to live below the poverty line and with limited educational opportunities. Indonesia officially sees itself as a pluralistic state in which several religions are recognized. Nevertheless, Islam shapes large parts of public and social life. In some regions (e.g., Aceh), Sharia law applies in parts of everyday life. Although religious diversity is officially guaranteed, Christians and members of other minorities experience restrictions or tensions in some parts of the country. At the same time, there is a growing number of people from Muslim backgrounds who are converting to Christianity (Muslim Background Believers, MBBs).

In addition to these various challenges, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis regularly threaten lives and infrastructure.
