With over 1.4 billion people, the People's Republic of China is one of the most populous countries in the world and has become the second-largest economic power. Nevertheless, a large part of the population lives in poverty, especially in rural areas. The contrast between high-tech metropolises and remote villages is enormous. While economic progress is celebrated, many people suffer under authoritarian state control and religious persecution.
